AWG and Scripted Ink. receive Screen Australia Enterprise funding to develop new generation of Australian screenwriters and showrunners

The Australian Writers’ Guild and Scripted Ink. are excited to announce they have been funded through Screen Australia’s Enterprise Industry fund for their screenwriting development initiative, The Writers’ Room Project.

The Writers’ Room Project is an innovative and market-responsive collaboration by AWG and Scripted Ink., designed to develop a new generation of experienced showrunners, script producers and script editors.

Up to 20 experienced and emerging writers will be selected by Scripted Ink. from AWG’s acclaimed Pathways Program to participate in a series of writers’ rooms, providing those writers with valuable experience and simultaneously creating fresh and exciting Australian drama content.

Jacqueline Elaine, Executive Director of AWG, said The Writers’ Room Project had been designed in response to Scripted Ink. and the Guild’s shared philosophy that putting screenwriters at the centre of the development and production process is essential to high-quality Australian television.

‘By allowing talented Australian screenwriters to spend time devising content in a real writers’ room setting, The Writers’ Room Project will not only develop a new generation of Australian showrunners, but also has the potential to showcase Australian writers to the world,’ Elaine said.

‘It is a unique project designed to create opportunities for Australian screenwriters,’ said Scripted Ink. Head of Development, Tim Pye.

‘The partnership between Scripted Ink., AWG and Screen Australia will ensure Australian writers and their projects are given the best possible chance for development and market attachment,’ Pye said.

Screen Australia’s Enterprise Industry fund encourages ambitious and innovative development projects and business initiatives aimed at capitalising on the talents of experienced Australian writers, directors and creative producers, and delivering high-quality, original, market-ready scripts. The Writers’ Room Project is one of six projects selected by Screen Australia for Enterprise Industry funding.
